MoL-textiles-and-clothing p. 172 suggests that medieval metal buttons with long shanks were fastened by passing the shank through an eyelet and running a cord through the loops of the shanks on the wrong side of the cloth. They allude to "visual evidence" and parallels from garments after the middle ages but do not name the paintings or the garments. Maria of In deme Jare Cristi found a painting of St. Margaret by Pietro Lorenzetti (1306-1348) in the Musée de Tesse, Le Mans, France. St. Margaret wears a yellow surcote with spherical buttons covered in white dots at the neck with a black line behind the buttons on the wrong side of the cloth. This is the only medieval painting which I have seen used to support this theory and St. Margaret's buttons are very large and splendid.
